The "Personal Mythologies" exhibit, curated by Don Wilkinson, will be opening next Saturday at the Narrows Center for the Arts. The Narrows is both a music and visual arts venue, located in Fall River, MA, with a mission to:
"Present music that matters, art that inspires, and commitment to community, to engage and educate people of all ages in Fall River and the southern New England area, and to partner with other like-minded local and regional organizations as a hub for culture and the arts."
The newest painting created for this exhibit features a popular character, as an adult, Christopher Robin from the popular series Winnie the Pooh. Christopher is depicted as an imaginative, curious, and kind-hearted person. He serves as a leader and caretaker for his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, showing empathy, wisdom, and a sense of adventure. During childhoood his interactions with Pooh, Piglet, and the others infused a nurturing nature and ability to provide comfort and solutions in challenging situations.
His empathy and kindness likely matured into a strong sense of compassion and responsibility towards both nature and people. Behind Christopher Robin is the silhouette of a curious black bear. Both the bear and Christopher are undisturbed by one another's presence. Christopher is tending to the rhododendrons alongside the bees who are witnessing the interaction.
This painting was inspired by the ongoing conversation about many women preferring to randomly encounter a bear in the woods instead of a man. Though there are sadly many dangerous individuals in the world, I've encountered many safe and often considerate male individuals who are similar to Christopher Robin's nature.
I think it's important to be safe and observant of our surroundings. It's also very important to highlight the supportive, and gentle nature that many men carry (which is often a reflection of their mother(s)).
